Welcome to Athens Eye Associates, an ophthalmology and optometry practice, where we are dedicated to providing high quality service, standards of excellence and expertise to care for your vision needs. Athens Eye doctors and office personnel are here to help you by offering a variety of eye care services including routine eye examinations, ocular disease management, laser therapy, and other surgical procedures in our office to help you reach your optimal vision. We also have a low vision rehabilitation/training suite and an optical lab for your convenience.

Our mission is to care for patients not only within the scope of ophthalmology but extending beyond. We aim to accomplish this goal exemplifying our core values of compassion, integrity, and respect.

Michael S. Jacobs, M.D.

Michael S. Jacobs, M.D., is board certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology and specializes in comprehensive ophthalmology as well as cataract and implant surgery.

He received his Doctorate of Medicine from the Emory University School of Medicine in Atlanta, Georgia. Dr. Jacobs then completed an internship in general surgery followed by a residency in ophthalmology at the Medical University of South Carolina’s Storm Eye Institute.

While completing his undergraduate studies at the University of Georgia, Dr. Jacobs was a member of Phi Beta Kappa and graduated Summa Cum Laude with highest honors. Dr. Jacobs is now a member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology practicing in the Athens area with affiliations at St. Mary’s Hospital, Athens Regional Medical Center, and the Surgery Center of Athens, where he served as Medical Director from 2016 to 2019. Outside of work, Michael cherishes being a father and husband, trail running, reading in solitude, and grilling on his Weber kettle.

Scotty L. Gadlin , M.D.

Scotty L. Gadlin, M.D., is board certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology. Dr. Gadlin has been trained in the latest techniques in cataract surgery, glaucoma surgery, and surgery of the eyelids. He also specializes in treatment of Dry Eye Syndrome, Diabetes, and Macular Degeneration.

Dr. Gadlin graduated from the University of Georgia. He earned his Doctorate of Medicine at the Medical College of Georgia in Augusta, GA. Through outstanding performance in Medical School, Dr. Gadlin was awarded membership into the prestigious Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Honor Society. After medical school, Dr. Gadlin remained at the Medical College of Georgia where he completed his internship in Internal Medicine and his residency in Ophthalmology.  

Dr. Gadlin has a passion for teaching and educating both patients and medical professionals.  He is Clinical Assistant Professor of Ophthalmology at the UGA/GRU medical partnership. He is a member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology and Georgia Society of Ophthalmology

Dr. Gadlin is excited to be back in Athens with his wife, Kassandra, newborn daughter, and their two dogs. When not at work treating patients, Dr. Gadlin enjoys woodworking, and is a member of the Athens Woodworking Club.

Nisha J. Patel, O.D.

Nisha J. Patel, OD is board certified by the National Board of Examiners in Optometry and specializes in general optometry, contact lenses, and low vision.

Dr. Patel received her Bachelor of Science and Doctorate of Optometry degree from the Pennsylvania College of Optometry. She is native to Texas and completed her undergraduate work at The University of Houston in 2004 with a Bachelors Administration in Marketing and Management.

Dr. Patel completed her clinical training with an emphasis in ocular disease at Jack C. Montgomery VA in Oklahoma, and Robert Cizik Eye Clinic of The University of Texas Medical School at Houston, where she interned closely with glaucoma specialists. She specialized in low vision at The Feinbloom Low Vision and Rehabilitation Center, helping patients with visual impairments by prescribing a variety of low vision devices. Dr. Patel is experienced in fitting complex lenses including soft and rigid gas permeable lenses for patients with astigmatism, presbyopia, keratoconus, and post-surgical corneas. She enjoys seeing patients for comprehensive eye exams, the treatment and management of glaucoma, and systemic diseases such as hypertension and diabetes.

Dr. Patel is a member of both the Georgia Optometry Association and the American Optometric Association. When not working, Dr. Patel enjoys spending time with her husband DJ and daughter Anadi. She also enjoys volunteering at the temple, is a baseball and basketball fan, and enjoys reading.
